Many women choose to have areola pigmenting treatments to enhance the appearance of their breasts. For some, this is the simple desire to change their natural areola’s size, shape, or color to their preferred esthetic. For others, it’s to correct asymmetries due to breastfeeding or elective surgeries. However, most commonly, areola medical tattooing represents the completion of the breast reconstruction process.

What Is Areola Tattooing?

Areola tattooing is a specialized form of medical tattooing that requires specific training, technical skill, experience, and a keen aesthetic eye to achieve natural-looking results.

I carefully select pigments to complement the patient’s skin tone and natural areola coloring. Various colors and shading techniques are used to ensure a realistic 3D effect that simulates natural areolas.

Procedure Options

Bilateral Areola Tattooing

This procedure is gratifying for women who have undergone reconstructive or plastic surgery on both breasts.

After Breast Reconstruction: If you have had a bilateral mastectomy with nipple reconstruction, together, we can formulate an areola color that matches your preoperative photographs, or, if you prefer, we can create a pigment that is entirely new. I will ensure that the size of the areolas is proportionate to your breast size for a beautiful, balanced, natural-looking result.

After Cosmetic Breast Surgery: If you have had elective breast enhancement surgery and would like to make your areolas appear larger, we can formulate a pigment that matches your natural areola. If, instead, you would like to make your natural areolas appear smaller, that’s easily achieved by implanting flesh-toned pigment into the perimeter of the areolas.

Unilateral Areola Tattooing

If you have had a unilateral mastectomy with nipple reconstruction, it’s essential to consider the contralateral breast when recreating the areola. I will carefully assess the size, color, and shape of your natural nipple and areola to ensure harmony between your reconstructed and natural breasts.

Scar Camouflaging

Scar camouflaging is a procedure many breast cancer survivors and women who undergo elective surgery alike are grateful for. Most women find this procedure extremely satisfying as it adds significant beauty to the breasts and aids in restoring confidence. Scar camouflaging can be achieved by laser treatments, medical scar tattooing, or a combination of both.

3D Areola Tattooing

If you did not undergo nipple/areola reconstruction, I can create realistic replacements with my 3D tattoos. During this intricate, highly artistic process, I use multiple pigment colors and a variety of shading techniques to replicate the subtle creases, textures, and features (including Montgomery glands) of a natural nipple/areola complex. I can make the nipple look like it has physical dimension when it is actually flat.

This option gives you the freedom to choose the areola size, shape, position, and color you want. Using my extensive experience and refined eye for aesthetics, I will recommend the options that will best achieve your envisioned results.

Why Consider Areola Tattooing?

Breast reconstruction is a significant step toward emotional healing after breast cancer surgery. Without a nipple and areola on their reconstructed breasts, many women do not feel complete and have a diminished sense of self and femininity. Realistic areola tattoos can renew confidence and cultivate empowerment, helping patients embrace their bodies after the ordeal they’ve endured. Many women consider these tattoos a powerful reminder of their resilience and triumph over adversity, making the entire experience deeply personal and transformative.

How Much Do Areola Tattoos Cost?

Areola medical tattooing and scar camouflaging is often covered by medical insurance when performed for reconstructive purposes. It is typically not covered for cosmetic reasons. Visit our Pricing page to learn more.
